SUMMERVILLE, SC -

Authorities are investigating after a woman and a child were found dead inside a Summerville home Tuesday.

According to the Berkeley County Coroner the bodies of a woman and a little girl were found in separate beds around noon Tuesday inside a home on Kershaw Road. A social worker from Sangaree Intermediate School went to 302 Kershaw Road after the little girl had been missing from school for two days.

When no one answered the door, the social worker called the Berkeley County Sheriffs Office. Authorities responded to the home around 11:30 Tuesday morning and found the bodies.

Neighbors were surprised when they heard what happened.

"I've lived here for 23 years, and it's a quiet neighborhood," Paul Thomas said. "It's a very nice neighborhood. We've always felt safe. We never thought something like this would happen next door."

Thomas lives next door to the crime scene. He said that he has seen a few people going in and out of the home but said they mostly kept to themselves.

Bill Salisbury, Berkeley County Coroner, said the deaths are being investigated as a homicide, but he would not discuss the cause of death or how long the victims had been dead.

News 2 has learned that the home's owner has rented out the home. According to public documents, two of the renters are Jacob Philip and Ashley Kaney. Our sister station in Augusta, Ga, WJBF, said that friends have reported that Kaney and her daughter have been missing for two days.

An affiliate station in Knoxville, Tennessee reports that Berkeley County Sheriffs are looking for Philip who may be traveling to Washington or Virginia. Officials declined to comment on that report, and have not officially named Philip as a suspect.

The Coroner said he will not release any names until an autopsy is performed. The autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning.
