The State Law Enforcement Division has charged 30-year-old Michael Bixby of Hobart, Indiana, with assisted suicide.
A statement from a SLED agent says Bixby strangled inmate Matthew Glidden in the jail March 24. The statement and arrest warrant gave no indication of how agents knew Glidden wanted to die. SLED spokesman Thom Berry refused to release any additional details because the investigation is still open.
Assisted suicide is a felony in South Carolina and carries a penalty of up to 15 years in prison.
Bixby was arrested Wednesday. It wasn't known if he had a lawyer.
