Charleston Southern has signed 26 student-athletes – 14 from South Carolina – as part of National Signing Day 2014, CSU head coach Jamey Chadwell announced on Wednesday afternoon.
The class is the second for Chadwell at CSU. He took the reins of the CSU program in mid-January of 2013 and led the Bucs to a school-record 10 wins and a No. 12 national ranking during his first season. This season was the first time he and his staff had a whole year to try to leave their footprint on the recruiting trail, and he feels they did just that.
"A lot of people think all the work for the recruiting is done just during the recruiting period from the middle of December until the end of January, but it actually goes on for almost a year," Chadwell said at Wednesday's recruiting luncheon. "From the time we got done with last year's signing class and figured out everything that was going on we made it our priority to make sure that this class was the foundation of our football program going forward. You've got to want to be at Charleston Southern and see the value of what we have to offer. These guys want (to be here). They saw what we are doing and where we are going."
The Buccaneers' class is heavy on local and in-state talent with more than half of the class coming from South Carolina. The entire class is from the southeast, with six signees from Florida, four from Georgia, and two from North Carolina.
"We made (recruiting in state) our priority," Chadwell said. "We wanted to take care of our home state and our borders first; try to get the best fits for us [in state] and then move outside of South Carolina."
In the Bucs' class, 18 of the 26 signees are on the defensive side of the ball.
"We made an emphasis on this class to really heavily go on the defensive side of the ball for some needs on that end of the field," Chadwell added. "We have some key guys to replace and need to fill some holes, especially at linebacker, and I think we've done that with this group."
Charleston Southern will begin spring practice in early March and will hold its Blue and Gold spring game on April 10 under the new lights at Buccaneer Field.
